I’m pursuing this in stages; first a 50mm lift to get the travel benefit of longer shocks and springs, then a 1″ body lift to increase the overhead room in the fender wells for larger tires, and eventually 37 or 38s. Since I’m only lifting 50mm, I decided to pursue caster correction by lowering the frame side radius arm mount by the same 50mm to return both the caster and the anti-dive to factory specs. I looked around and found a bolt-on option to do just this; but that product is larger than I’d like, and I’m a big proponent of weld-on solutions. The other aspect that I was interested in was relocating the axle forward to create more firewall clearance for larger tire sizes. (When the radius arm rear pivot is returned to its original height relative to the axle, the wheel returns to the middle of its arc at ride height – versus the more typical lifted arrangement in which the radius arm rear pivot remains in its location relative to the frame, and the axle centerline is lower than the radius arm rear pivot at rest. Because the wheel is returned to the factory arc path with my setup, the tire is again closer to the firewall at full compression. Moving the axle forward for increased clearance is beneficial in this scenario.) So, I’ve made some Radius Arm Mounts to relocate the frame end of the 80-series radius arms down 50 mm for a 2″ or so lift and 25mm forward for that big tire/firewall clearance (and to improve approach angle.) On paper, this down & forward relocation is good for 3.45 degrees of caster correction.

By making them weld-on, I’m able to run a reinforcing plane/rib up into the rear of the factory mount, increasing the weld area and tying everything together as a single structure. This also allows me to keep these mounts as svelte as possible so that any obstacle that the arm might slide over will not get hung up on the mount extension. And even though they are weld-on, they do not obscure the stock hole, so if you change directions (not everyone is as concerned about not increasing anti-dive as I am) you can trim off the lower part and still have a reinforced factory mount for your trouble. 🙂 (but I don’t think you’ll end up doing that)

GW nugget on IH8MUD on 38s – running 2″ suspension lift, 1′ body lift, prototype 30mm RAMs

NOTES: *the front axle is relocated 25mm forward, which is great for firewall clearance for increased tire sizes but expect some fender trimming in the front with very large sizes. *I recommend using an old/spare radius arm bushing as a spacer along with the factory nut and bolt to hold the factory mount solid while tacking the RAM in place; then moving the bushing/bolt/nut down to the RAM to hold the ears parallel and coplanar with the inner walls of the factory mount for welding. – great excuse to finally get around to replacing those factory bushings! *these are tricky to bend, and as such, often have one side (typically the outer, which has multiple bends) that may be bent slightly over 90 degrees – if this is the case, tack & secure the side that is bent to a perfect right angle to the factory mount first to hold it firm before opening up the other side for appropriate bushing clearance. feel free to contact me with any questions when you get to this step

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/8734/1998/files/6d83ecc0-Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-20-10-36-Radius-Arm-Mounts.png?v=1781925675
strut-tower-reinforcement-str
Strut Tower Reinforcement (STR)

Strut Tower Reinforcement

3/16″ thick upper mount reinforcement plates to prevent cracked strut towers on 1st Gen Tacomas and 3rd Gen 4Runners. Then, due to the extreme angles they find themselves in, those beefy short links are going to start bending your link mounts. If you follow trail reports on T4R, you’ve already seen the factory lower link mounts (frame-side) fold over during hard use. In addition to being underbuilt for hard wheeling, they were designed with a terrible approach angle! There are aftermarket “skids” available, but they neither reinforce the mount ears (the part that actually folds) nor do they correct the shape/angle of the mount itself. So I made some weld-on lower link reinforcements for the 3rd gen 4Runner to correct these issues and accommodate beefy joints (the factory mounts do not have adequate clearance for some aftermarket joints to realize their full range of motion.) These are made from folded 3/16″ plate and are self-aligning – just put the bolt through, trim the angled sides to fit your truck or splay them outward as needed), swing it up to meet the frame, and weld it in

5th gen LLS (and 4th gen, and GX, and FJC)

and THEN, you 4th/5th gen guys started bending up your lower link mounts; so I made an LLS for the 120 platform as well: – and shipping is on me if you’re in the continental US, as always.

80-SERIES LANDCRUISER

Yeah, I love my FZJ80 and am pleased that there is quality aftermarket support for it, but one of the gaping holes in the marketplace was frame-side lower link mount protection (literally no reasonable options to speak of.) So I’ve taken care of that. Like my 4Runner LLS options, this skidplate is both a reinforcement and a ramp to get the mount up and over the obstacle. Weld-on, 3/16″ plate. I think this one turned out particularly nice, although it took some head-scratching plate-origami to get there.

Install:

To install, I throw a strap around the axle to pull it forward just enough to take the tension off of the bolt for easy removal. Then the bolt is removed and the LLS can be tapped up into place. When the inside hole is aligned, put the factory bolt back in and continue to tap the outside upward until it pops over the flanged radius of the factory mount. At this point the bolt head should be centered in the slot for socket access as shown here: Now you can scribe a line around the perimeter of the part as a reference for where to grind away the paint for welding, remove the LLS, prep the frame, and reinstall to weld it in. I’d put the link in place and torque it, then tack everything, pull the link & finish weld. when you get to this part, use a drift to fold over the tab so you can have a continuous bead around the inner corner of the frame where it meets the mount: Also, this slot (running parallel with the centerline of the factory mount) is intended to be a drain, so don’t weld it shut. Easy-peasy.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0741/8734/1998/files/63f85cb9-Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-20-35-55-Lower-Link-Mount-Skids_Reinforcement.png?v=1781925675
lower-control-arm-reinforcement-lcar
Lower Control Arm Reinforcement (LCAR)

Lower Control Arm Reinforcement

A system of reinforcement plates to combat cracking from hard & repeated upward compression on weak factory LCA’s. High Clearance Radiator Swap: [TLDR: it's required in order to install Opt Skids on most vehicles, but it's a really easy swap and will have you wondering why you didn't do it sooner. It was just plain dumb for Toyota to use a radiator that hangs past the frame in the first place. We're simply fixing that mistake.] To unlock the full potential of your front end ground clearance, Opt Skids have been designed around a radiator that sits above the frame rails (this is how it should have come from the factory). YES that means installing a shorter radiator if your existing one hangs below the frame. NO that does not mean less cooling capacity, in fact the opposite! The aluminum radiator in our kit actually INCREASES fluid capacity and cooling performance over the factory radiator, by a lot. It is a very high quality unit sourced from Champion Cooling here in Southern CA, rated for up to 550HP, and provides a lot of bang for the buck as the lowest priced full-aluminum option out there (excluding the no-name brands).

Haven't done the high clearance radiator swap yet? The goal of this diff drop is to prevent premature wear on the CV joints and boots after a lift, by lowering the differential down (usually an inch) which decreases the CV angles at ride height. The problem: on our trucks, the front diff mounts are very far forward compared to where the CV axles connect. So when you install a diff drop, you are sacrificing an inch of ground clearance at the diff mounts, for only ~1/3 inch of drop at the CVs. Additionally, you are potentially fluid-starving the driveshaft pinion at the rear of the diff (since it's now tilted forward) while also negatively affecting the driveshaft pinion angle as a result.
